Vimeo offers four membership options: Plus, PRO and Business, Premium. Each has different levels of storage and support.
Vimeo offers a free basic membership, but limits it to 500MB of maximum storage per week.
Have you ever uploaded a video and realized that you need to make a change? Vimeo allows you to replace a video after it has been uploaded without losing the statistics of that video. This can be very useful if you realize that you made a mistake in your video, or if something like a name needs updating.
Vimeo is a video-sharing platform that was launched in 2004 by a group of filmmakers. Since then, the platform has grown to more than 80 million creators, most of them artists in film, animation, music and other works of art, who have been able to use Vimeo as a way to share and promote their work.
It differs greatly from YouTube due to its distinctive 'artistic' character. That's not to say that artists shouldn't promote their work on YouTube, because they should if their audience is there.
Simply put, upload your own creative videos for others to enjoy, and browse the videos available on the platform to view other creators' videos. Anyone can like, comment on or share a video. You can also add any video to your Watch Later list or to a Collection you have made.
Because Vimeo is regarded as a more professional network of artists, the community appreciates the content shared there much more, resulting in friendlier and more useful discussions compared to YouTube. Depending on the video (and audience), you may notice a big difference in the comments left on a video on Vimeo compared to the same uploaded to YouTube.
These are some of the cool features that Vimeo offers its content creators:
Uploader: Select a video file to upload from your computer, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive or Box account.
Enhancer: Vimeo will help you add a music track from your music catalog to any of your videos, many of which are free to use.
Collections: Add your favorite videos to your own wallets, albums, channels or groups.
Video School: Vimeo has a section entirely dedicated to showing you tutorials and lessons on how to create the best videos.
Music Store - Browse all available music tracks that you can use with your videos and arm them using the Enhancer tool.
Creative Commons Videos: Vimeo has a Creative Commons licensed user videos section, which means there are certain ways you can legally use them for your own work.
Video Statistics - See how many views your videos get, what videos play all the way, and all your comments at a glance.
Tip Jar: Vimeo recently introduced the 'tip jar' for content creators, which allows them to accept small cash payments from viewers who want to tip them in appreciation for their work.
Sell Videos - This feature is for updated members only, allowing you to sell your own videos as part of Vimeo's On Demand feature.
Here are some of the great ways you can find and enjoy videos on Vimeo:
Staff Selection: Every day, Vimeo staff selects their new favorite videos and shares them in the 'Staff Selection' section. This is a great way to find those awesome videos that really deserve to be exposed by viewers like you.
Categories: If there is a specific topic or video style that interests you, you can browse through the available categories to quickly find something that may interest you.
Channels: On Vimeo, members create channels and use them to display video collections focused on common themes. It is another useful way to discover great videos according to your interests.
Groups: The Vimeo community is strong and genuine, so Groups help bring members closer together. You can chat with others about videos and common interests by creating your own group or joining existing ones.
Couch mode: Couch mode basically allows you to watch videos in full screen. Sit back, relax and enjoy!
On Demand: Buy videos from individual creators for a small fee to instantly view and support their work.
Vimeo offers several different options for members who want specific storage and feature needs. Here is a brief breakdown:
Free Vimeo - You can immediately register with Vimeo for free. However, you get a fairly limited selection of features and only 500MB of storage space per week for the videos you want to upload. You can always upgrade, and the free account is recommended for beginners who aren't serious about content creation yet.
Vimeo Plus: A Plus membership costs approximately $ 9 a month and a limit of 5GB of storage per week. You also get unlimited bandwidth on the Vimeo player and a bunch of other things that core members don't have access to.
Vimeo Pro: This is for professionals. It's about $ 24 a month that offers the most exquisite, high-quality image for your videos. You also get 20 GB of storage per week, with no bandwidth limits, Pro stats, and more.
Vimeo also offers two more premium plans for business and advanced video needs.
Vimeo is a New York City-based hosting, sharing and video services platform. Vimeo operates ad-free and instead earns revenue by providing subscription plans for video content producers and offering software as a service (SaaS) with video creation, editing and streaming tools, as well as the means for professionals in the video connect with clients and other professionals. Vimeo focuses on delivering HD video on a variety of devices
The site was originally built by Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein in 2004 as a OFF twist for CollegeHumor to share humor videos with colleagues, though it was pushed aside to support the increasing popularity of CollegeHumor. IAC acquired CollegeHumor and Vimeo in 2006, and after Google acquired YouTube for more than $ 1.65 billion, IAC directed more effort at Vimeo to compete against YouTube, focusing on providing curated content and HD videos to distinguish themselves from other video sharing sites. Lodwick and Klein finally left in 2009, and IAC implemented a more company-centric structure to develop Vimeo services, with current CEO Anjali Sud in operation since July 2017.
Vimeo was founded in November 2004 by Connected Ventures, the parent company of humor-based website CollegeHumor, as a side project by web developers Jake Lodwick and Zach Klein to share and tag short videos with their friends. The idea for a video-sharing site was inspired after CollegeHumor received lots of views from a video posted on the October 2004 Saturday Night Live show that included the infamous lip sync incident by Ashlee Simpson. The name Vimeo was created by Lodwick as a play on the words video and me. As CollegeHumor drew audiences, Vimeo stepped aside while Lodwick and Klein concentrated on supporting the CollegeHumor main site. Vimeo user the base grew only a small amount over the next few years, mainly by word of mouth.
IAC, owned by Barry Diller, acquired a majority ownership of Connected Ventures in August 2006, as they were drawn to the success of CollegeHumor, which at that time attracted around 6 million visitors per month. By reviewing Connected Ventures assets, IAC discovered the Vimeo property; This occurred at the same time that Google had purchased YouTube for $ 1.65 billion in October 2006. In early 2007, IAC had ordered Lodwick, Klein and Andrew Pile to work on Vimeo full time and expand their capabilities. To differentiate itself from YouTube and other video sharing sites that had popped up since Google's purchase, Vimeo focused on the content creator with better upload tools and better in-site content curation rather than popularity. In October 2007, Vimeo was the first video-sharing site to offer high-definition content to users through Flash-based high-definition video playback. While IAC's acquisition of Connected Ventures helped direct Vimeo's direction, IAC's corporate nature created problems with many of the original CollegeHumor and Vimeo staff members . Lodwick planned to leave the company near the end of 2007, as he said IAC's incorporation of business processes hampered his creativity, but was fired a few weeks before that point. Klein left in early 2008.
