TorGuard has a very large server network of over 3,000 servers in 68 locations in 55 countries. A larger server network is usually good news for connection speeds, and the website claims that TorGuard is the "fastest VPN and proxy network powered by Gigabit 3K + servers with unmeasured bandwidth." Before connecting to the TorGuard network, our base speed was 60 Mbps.
TorGuard charges a little more than average, but on the surface the cost is still reasonable for what the service has to offer.
However, things become expensive when you consider that some important services should be purchased as an add-on.
For example, if you want to use one of TorGuard's streaming IP addresses to access Netflix, you will have to pay a hefty monthly fee in addition to the basic subscription cost.
You are given a lot of freedom to customize your service package. Although this review is about VPN, TorGuard actually offers three different services: a proxy, a VPN, and an email service. You can also buy packages that include all three services.
The features and interface are similar on all devices. The main difference is the iOS app, which we actually found to have a much more attractive and user-friendly interface than the other dedicated apps.
The downside to Android and iOS devices is that OpenVPN connections cannot be created through the TorGuard app. Instead, you must manually configure a connection through third-party software.
On the plus side, there are easy-to-follow instructions available on the TorGuard website to set up OpenVPN connections on mobile devices.
TorGuard offers its subscribers the ability to connect to up to 5 simultaneous devices with each subscription.
You also have the option of paying a small fee for each additional simultaneous connection, which is useful.
Customer service is a solid area for TorGuard. There are three main channels for contacting customer service: 24-hour, 7-day-a-week live chat, email tickets, and a toll-free phone number (only available in the US).
We had a pleasant experience with 24/7 live chat support. Within five minutes of arriving with a question, a representative answered us. Our questions were fully answered by the expert support team.
Live chat is definitely the best way to get an answer, but for in-depth technical questions, you may be asked to open a ticket so that you can include more details and screenshots, if applicable.
TorGuard has room for improvement when it comes to creating a smooth user experience.
The TorGuard application interface is simplified and overwhelming at the same time. The main screen asks you to select your encryption and protocol settings before connecting to a server.
TorGuard has some great strengths. The VPN is privacy friendly, and its robust security features give you a lot of freedom to customize your experience. TorGuard can avoid harsh censorship even in China, and also offers great torrent support.
TorGuard offers three different services: a VPN, a Proxy and an email service. The payment interface gives you some freedom to mix and match different packages based on your needs.
TorGuard's VPN and Proxy services allow you to choose from multiple subscriptions of different lengths, each with the same characteristics. There is a free version of the email service with limited data storage, as well as several payment plans of different lengths. Generally, discounts are offered on longer subscriptions.
TorGuard also sells special package packages for businesses. Enterprise VPN packages include multiple dedicated VPN, email and IP user accounts, with several different package sizes to choose from.
All subscriptions come with a 7-day money back guarantee. Multiple payment options are accepted, including major credit cards, PayPal, Paymentwall and Paygarden. Bitcoin is also accepted, which is a great option for anonymity.
We found TorGuard service to be reliable and had no technical issues or installation issues during our testing.
It's easy to contact the TorGuard customer support team if you have any concerns. We are very satisfied with the live chat support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, which we found responsive, informative and direct.
You can also contact TorGuard through a ticket request system on the website or by calling TorGuard's toll-free number if you are in the US. USA
There are some helpful resources available on the TorGuard website, including a YouTube channel, a search knowledge base, a community forum, and a FAQ page.
Strong privacy, security and P2P support, but speeds below average and not very user friendly
TorGuard is packed with great security features and a log-free privacy policy. The VPN also offers great support for torrents.
However, we weren't impressed by the slow VPN connection speeds and we didn't find the interface very user friendly.
TorGuard becomes expensive if you are looking for faster speeds or streaming support, which comes at an additional cost.
TorGuard VPN is the best bet for BitTorrent browsers and readers looking to secure their web traffic. It is packed with features that are sure to attract security wonders, even though its client is awkward.
TorGuard VPN is an excellent VPN service that protects your web traffic and offers a large number of plugins to complete the package. Its impressive server layout makes it worth checking out, but some may turn OFF because of the app's appearance. If that is not a problem for you, TorGuard will serve you well.
A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your computer and a VPN server. Your web traffic travels through that tunnel, which means that anyone who is snooping, even on the same network as you, will see nothing. A VPN can also help protect your privacy, that is important now that ISPs can sell your data. ISPs have a huge view of their online activities, but not when using a VPN.
A VPN is an essential tool for when you travel or use that secure and unsafe public Wi-Fi network at the local coffee shop because it can protect those unsafe networks. A VPN also makes it more difficult to identify you online by hiding your true IP address, which can be used to determine your geographic location. VPN services are frequently used by activists and journalists to evade government censors and communicate with the outside world.
Despite its name, TorGuard is unrelated to Project Tor, the digital maze of powers designed to help people remain anonymous online. Instead, the "Tor" in the name actually refers to BitTorrent, and the service aims to help users maintain their privacy while torrenting. It should come as no surprise that P2P and torrenting are allowed in TorGuard. For a long time, this was a rarity among VPN services, but not anymore. All of the top rated VPNs I've reviewed now allow file sharing, though some limit their use to specific servers. Among the big competition, TorGuard is still one of the best VPNs for BitTorrent.
Like most VPN companies, TorGuard offers several different price levels: $ 9.99 a month, $ 19.99 every three months, $ 29.99 every six months, $ 59.99 per year, or $ 99.99 every two years. One subscription allows you to connect five devices to TorGuard, and you can add up to 200 more devices for $ 1.00 per device per month using a handy slider. Five connections are average for VPN companies, but TorGuard has the best process for adding more device connections. That said, NordVPN offers six connections and CyberGhost VPN offers seven, while Windscribe VPN and Avira Phantom VPN have no limit on the number of connections.
The price The current average for a highly rated VPN service is around $ 10.30, which means that TorGuard is a good deal from the get-go. NordVPN ($ 3.49 a month on NordVPN) costs more, at $ 11.99 a month, but it has great features and a huge network of servers, making it worth the extra cost. Private Internet access is another great product at the incredibly low price of $ 6.95 per month.
If price is your biggest issue, consider trying one of the valuable free VPN services available. ProtonVPN has an excellent free subscription level that limits the number of servers available but has no data limit. Its paid levels are also very affordable, making it one of the most flexible services I've reviewed.
In addition to its core product, TorGuard offers plugins that will especially appeal to frequent BitTorrent users. These include static and dedicated IP addresses in the US. USA Or the UK for $ 7.99 a month, and DDoS protected IP addresses in Romania for $ 11.99 a month. You can also purchase access to the company's 10 Gbit network for an additional $ 19.99 per month. Few other companies offer these types of options.
There is more than one way to create an encrypted tunnel through VPN. My preferred method uses the OpenVPN protocol, which is known to be fast and reliable. It is also open source, so you can be sure that your code has been chosen for vulnerabilities.
TorGuard supports numerous VPN protocols, including OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, and IPSec. TorGuard also supports so-called "Stealth" VPN protocols, which use SSL VPN to prevent an entity from blocking VPN traffic. These include OpenVPN Stealth, ShadowSocks, Stunnel, and AnyConnect (also known as OpenConnect).
TorGuard currently offers VPN servers in more than 53 countries. These are fairly well distributed in the Americas, Asia, and Europe. I'm glad to see that TorGuard has servers in India and multiple servers in Africa and the Middle East, as these areas are often ignored by other VPN services. It should be noted that TorGuard also has servers in China, Russia, Turkey and Vietnam, countries known for their repressive internet policies.
The distribution of the TorGuard server compares well with that of the competition. NordVPN, for example, covers 62 countries, Golden Frog VyprVPN has 64 countries and only 33 private Internet access. However, ExpressVPN has excellent server distribution in 94 countries, including many regions unattended by VPN.
VPN servers spinning companies to meet demand, so the number of servers depends partly on the number of users. Still, more servers are likely to be better, as it means you're less likely to find an overcrowded server that results in poor performance. TorGuard has greatly expanded its server offering, and now has more than 3,000 servers. That puts him with private internet access ($ 8.45 / mo on private internet access), CyberGhost, and ExpressVPN, all of which have broken the 3,000-server mark. NordVPN still leads the pack in large size, now supporting over 5,200 servers.
You should trust the VPN you use, because the company behind it could end up with a huge insight into your online activities. That's why when I check VPNs, I talk to providers and read the entire privacy policy. TorGuard's privacy policy used to be very short and to the point. The current incarnation is slightly longer and more difficult to analyze, and contains little information about the actual VPN service. The company would do well to take a page from TunnelBear, which uses an interactive page to explain its policy in great detail.
While the company's privacy policy leaves a lot to be desired, company reps tell me that TorGuard does not store logs of customer usage or activity while the VPN is active. The company does not have identification records or time stamp information that can be used to identify an individual. Better yet, TorGuard says it only makes revenue from subscription sales, rather than selling data.
That last point is echoed by many VPN companies, so it's important to know where these companies are located and under what legal jurisdiction they operate. Some countries have more privacy-friendly laws than others, after all. The company behind TorGuard is VPNetworks LLC, which is located in the US. USA And it operates under its legal jurisdiction. Some people prefer companies based outside of the US. Since it may represent an obstacle to the investigation by law enforcement.
Some VPN companies have started publishing comprehensive audits to assure customers that the company is operating in good faith and securing their data. TorGuard representatives tell me that the company is "constantly auditing and improving the security and privacy of our network and services," but did not indicate that public audits would be conducted. NordVPN recently released an audit of its non-registration policy, and TunnelBear has agreed to publish annual audits of its operation. TorGuard also did not participate in the VPN questionnaire from the Center for Democracy and Technology, but provided me with much of the same information.
In my tests, I installed the TorGuard software on a Lenovo ThinkPad T460s laptop running Windows 10.
