Our VPN is a security and privacy service designed to protect and hide your Internet usage habits from your Internet service provider or from any other person between your device and your Internet service provider. Our service adds a layer of encrypted protection between your device and our server, making your Internet browsing more secure. This added layer of protection is invaluable when you use free internet in public places or free Wi-Fi access points where security is almost non-existent.
Anonymity and privacy protection go hand in hand. We use a NAT firewall on all of our servers to share our public IPs. Using the NAT firewall to share our public IPs has two main benefits; Not only are you protected from other people (hackers) trying to access your device remotely, but your internet traffic mixes with the traffic of other IPVanish clients, making it very difficult to know what any person. Mixing your Internet traffic with other IPVanish users using our shared IPs gives you excellent privacy while connected to our VPN.
The benefits of our VPN include:
Helps prevent ISPs from making decisions about the quality of their service based on the sites / services they use on the Internet
Protect yourself against unwanted spying and collecting data from other people who share the same internet connection (eg public WiFi)
Choose where you are seen accessing the Internet and at the same time add an additional layer of security between you and the site / service you are accessing
A VPN service works by establishing a secure encrypted connection between your device and our VPN servers and then sending data to the Internet through it. An encrypted connection is encrypted / meaningless to everyone else except your device and our server.
There are two main reasons why a VPN service is used:
Avoid letting your ISP, access point provider or anyone else connected between you and our servers know what they are doing online
Access region-restricted content or hide the actual location of your device
A VPN service will not prevent all forms of malware , Trojans, and viruses .
Your computer is certainly less susceptible to them for the sole reason that anyone outside of our VPN service will not be able to get direct contact with your computer unless your computer calls them first. Please note, however, that almost all viruses / malware / Trojans are downloaded from the Internet via email or a website. Our service does not actively block anything. Also, most forms of malware and Trojans (some selected viruses too) They will call from your computer and initiate communication first, which our VPN cannot stop.
Why should you care? A computer slowing down due to Malware is frustrating. A computer compromised with a Trojan can financially harm you if your financial records are compromised. A computer that is downed by a virus is useless. You still need to have adequate protection on your computer to combat these things. It's the same idea as getting a flu shot: You may not need it, but if you ever do, you'll be happy to have it. Therefore, always make sure that your device with Internet access always has adequate anti-virus and anti-malware protection software installed to ensure a safer browsing experience.
You can connect to IPVanish with up to 10 devices simultaneously per account. Alternatively, you can configure a router with the IPVanish service and any device connected to the router will go through the VPN . A router only counts as one device this way, regardless of how many electronic devices are connected.
IPVanish is compatible with most major platforms, including Windows , macOS , Fire TV, Android , iOS , Chrome OS, and Linux . Smart electronics and non-native IoT devices can use the VPN through an IPVanish-enabled router.
While heavy encryption is known to have an impact on speed, there are cases where IPVanish VPN can make an Internet connection faster. This generally occurs in the case of third-party limitations such as ISP intrusion or network congestion, a common disadvantage of free Wi-Fi connection .
IPVanish protocols
We support multiple types of VPN connection to make IPVanish as powerful and adaptable as possible. Here are some details and tips to help you decide which one is best for you.
IKEv2 (Internet Key Exchange Protocol version 2)
IKEv2, a protocol available exclusively through IPSec, is used to configure the security association or the specific approach of how IP packets are encrypted through IPSec. While IKEv2 is only available on newer mobile devices, it is considered a more secure extension of the IPSec protocol because devices can switch between a Wi-Fi and cellular network without interrupting the VPN connection.
OpenVPN
Use this protocol whenever possible. It allows multiple types of authentication methods, but finally uses SSL / TLS (similar to your web browser) for key exchange. While it generally offers faster access speeds than L2TP, it also requires the installation of third-party software and certificate files to use it, unless, of course, you are using IPVanish software. Also, support for mobile devices is limited.
TCP (Transmission Control Protocol)
OpenVPN over TCP is the most popular and reliable type of VPN connection. It uses error correction to avoid the loss of information packets during data transfer. These lost packets would eventually lead to failed websites and incomplete downloads were it not for the automatic retransmission of TCP from them.
UDP (User Datagram Protocol)
OpenVPN over UDP is often faster than TCP because it has no bug fixes. While dropped packets are unavoidable using UDP, certain web technologies have a better experience in this way, particularly VoIP and online gaming, where real-time interaction would be disrupted by the transmission of old data.
L2TP (Layer 2 Tunnel Protocol)
L2TP is best for mobile devices that do not support the OpenVPN protocol. While L2TP fixes vulnerabilities in PPTP, it can result in slower speeds than OpenVPN. Also, because it uses multiple ports, it can be more difficult to configure on a router.
IPSec (Internet Protocol Security)
IPSec is a set of protocols that encrypts IP packets for transport and tunneling. Available for most mobile devices, IPsec protects all application traffic over an IP network. But unlike OpenVPN, PPTP and other connection types, IPSec does not define a particular encryption algorithm or authentication function per se, it simply provides a framework for secure transport.
PPTP (Point-to-Point Tunnel Protocol)
While PPTP is generally used on older operating systems and outdated mobile devices, it is the protocol most likely to work when the rest fail. However, due to many known security vulnerabilities, PPTP is only recommended as a last resort for low-risk, high-speed browsing, such as streaming video.

VPNs create an encrypted haven within a shared network, often public Wi-Fi networks, broadband operators, and local area networks, to maintain the privacy of transmitted data. VPNs originally rose to fame decades ago as a method for remote workers to access their corporate network for confidential files and secure communication. Today, however, VPN providers like IPVanish offer a simple solution for daily Internet privacy and online freedom. A VPN protects your online connection so that external people with access to the same network cannot intercept your activity. VPNs protect your internet traffic and hide your browsing data from common third parties, including cyber criminals, internet service providers and invading advertisers. An additional advantage of a VPN is its ability to change the virtual location. When the VPN is activated, your real IP address is hidden and your public IP address becomes a VPN IP. Both a VPN and a secure cloud service are essential. Individually, IPVanish and SugarSync provide many of their own benefits. But by bundling IPVanish and SugarSync, you'll create a complete security suite for a fraction of the cost of buying them separately.
