Zero-knowledge encryption means that no one except you (not even the service provider) can access your protected data. This is a crucial point, in fact, even with fully encrypted files, if the server has access to the keys, a centralized hacker attack can cause an unrecoverable data breach.
Zero-knowledge encryption is a much more secure way to protect data than encryption in transit, encryption at rest, and end-to-end encryption. Here at Internxt, we make use of zero-knowledge encryption.
In-transit encryption protects a message while it is being transmitted between two parties. (i.e. between your computer and the cloud provider) The problem is that the server can access all the messages stored on it, and therefore if the server comes under attack, all your stored data could be leaked.
Encryption at rest protects the file or data on the server while it is not being used. Files are encrypted while they are stored, but they are not secure when they are transferred and are not protected from central attacks on the server. The first is the reason why it is usually combined with an encryption-in-transit solution.
The main problem with both of these options is that if you trust a service that is not very secure, a single central attack could discover all of your data.
And that's where end-to-end encryption comes into play. Although still less secure than zero-knowledge encryption, end-to-end encryption is a communication system where messages can only be read by communicating users who have the key. User data is decrypted, but only on your personal device, never on the server. Today, this is the most widely used way to protect yourself from data breaches, but as its name says, it works from “one end to the other”. End-to-end encryption actually managed to overcome the vulnerabilities of encryption-in-transit and encryption-at-rest solutions, creating a fortress for communication services.
Zero-knowledge encryption, on the other hand, is a solution that addresses this issue by hiding the encryption key, even from the storage provider, resulting in an authentication request without password exchange.
