About FastestVPN

Last time we saw that FastestVPN reached about 30 percent of base speed, which is quite average for a VPN service. This time, speeds commonly hit 45 percent of base speed, which is great.

As usual, those results don't tell the whole story. FastestVPN's speeds were outstanding in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Germany. Our tests in Asia and Australia were inconsistent. One day, we were able to get a surprising speed score in Singapore, but often the results in that part of the world were unusable.

Despite that result, however, the other FastestVPN locations were so good that they didn't cut the score as much. The scores weren't good enough to beat the current speed champion HotSpot Shield, but overall the results are still very good.

Features and services

The last time we looked at FastestVPN in early 2019, we weren't that impressed - and the name? It is not exact in our experience. what a difference a year makes. The company added new country locations, and the overall server count increased from 150 to 250. As for the claim, is it the fastest? The company is more persuasive this time.

FastestVPN gave up the single panel design we saw last year for a more traditional desktop look. It still has the signature yellow lightning bolt we saw in 2019 for its connect button.

It has a left rail with a variety of options, but the only ones you'll likely use are Home and Locations. The other two (About and Account) are informative.

Settings can be accessed from the upper right corner of the home panel. This screen is very similar to what we saw in the latest version of the application. You can change your VPN protocol simply by clicking one of the five buttons: IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP, TCP and UDP. IKEv2 is the default value and is the correct choice for most people.

Beneath the VPN protocol options are a series of check boxes. Internet Kill Switch is still there, as is the Start at startup option which is enabled by default. FastestVPN also added a default option to reconnect if the VPN connection goes down, the option to automatically connect at startup and disconnect the VPN connection automatically if you close the app.

Returning to the default home screen, you have the option to choose the country you want to connect to, or you can click Smart Connect. This is a new feature for FastestVPN, but one we've seen from other VPNs. The basic idea is that you find the fastest VPN server compared to your actual location. That will usually be the closest server to you, but not always.

The application in Windows also performs ad blocking and malware protection. These two features are enabled by default and cannot be converted to OFF as they are happening on the server side. The company says it can provide ad blocking by blocking blacklisted domains (known ad network) based on users' DNS requests. In our experience, ad blocking was very effective.

FastestVPN now supports US Netflix streaming. USA And Disney Plus. To use these streaming services, you can connect to the US Miami server. USA Another option is to open the settings, change the VPN protocol to UDP, and then you will see an option for USA Netflix in the server list.

In our tests, the Netflix feature worked fine, but Disney Plus was more troublesome on the Miami server. Every time we went to the welcome page, it didn't show the 'buy now' options, and we couldn't log in. However, Disney's anti-VPN measures are not as comprehensive as Netflix's, and switching to another US server. USA everything works fine for Disney Plus.

You We asked the company about the problem with the Miami server and if the ad blocking features prevented these buttons from displaying; The company said it was unlikely. However, we cannot see any other reasonable explanation for this.

FastestVPN also plans to add split tunnels to its Windows app, but the feature was not ready for release at this time. Split tunnel, whereby traffic can be split between VPN and direct internet connection based on user specifications, is currently available in Android and iOS apps.

The norm for VPN services is to offer five simultaneous connections per account. FastestVPN duplicates it and allows an account of up to 10 device connections at a time.

Privacy, anonymity and trust.

The fastest official VPN business location is the Cayman Islands. The company chose that location to avoid any laws that require the company to maintain browsing records for its customers. The service also has a commercial office in Los Angeles. The CEO of the company is Azneem Bilwani.

FastestVPN's privacy policy says that it does not record any information about its customers. The only thing the company maintains, he says, is the email address. The policy itself is also very easy to read and is written as a frequently asked question.

To register for an account, FastestVPN requires an email address. The company accepts payments by credit card or PayPal.

FastestVPN is much better than the last time we looked. It offers more servers, more locations, supports streaming services, looks good in Windows, and is easy to use. FastestVPN offers enough speed for most everyday uses, and it has some nice additional features like malware and ad blocking, internet interrupt switch and soon tunnel split in Windows.

We're not fans of exotic business venues to avoid keeping records, but it's worth considering $ 30 for 10 connections.

Privacy and registration

FastestVPN's website has a clear headline stating that the service has "No records at all!", And goes on to say "We never record your activities on the internet. No one can track you after you have visited a particular website, while connected to our server. '

In heading OFF of the Privacy Policy, we found the same message, with one small additional detail: 'We do not store your records anyway. Any information or records related to your browsing history (the websites you visit, the content you download or transmit, your traffic destinations or your DNS queries) remains with you and you alone. '

While this sounds great, there is no way to know if the company is complying with these non-registration claims. It's almost the same story with most VPNs, but some (TunnelBear, NordVPN, VyprVPN, more) have undergone public audits, giving real evidence that they are doing what they promise. That's a huge improvement on the usual 'you can trust us, no, really' approach, and we expect more providers to do the same in the coming years.

Applications

FastestVPN's Windows client looks good, with a bright and cheery interface that works more or less as expected. Your preferred server is clearly displayed, you can quickly browse others in a list, and a large Connect button protects you on demand.

The configuration is kept to a minimum, with only three options to choose your protocol (OpenVPN, IKEv2, L2TP, PPTP), start the client with Windows and enable or disable an interrupt switch.

Although this is quite simple and straightforward, there are some usability issues. When connecting, for example, there is no desktop notification telling you when you are protected. And pressing Disconnect always gives you a 'Are you sure?' message, which requires an additional click that you would not normally see elsewhere.

There are also more important problems. We attempted to forcibly close an IVEv2 connection with the kill switch that became OFF and the client was also unable to generate any alerts, instead showing that it was still connected. Our internet access was blocked, so there was no privacy risk, but it would certainly confuse the user.

Testing the kill switch revealed another problem. When we manually closed our connection, the client successfully blocked Internet access, but not immediately. Our test software showed that for a short period of time, perhaps just a fraction of a second, our actual IP address was exposed to the outside world.

We've seen much worse customer issues, many don't have interrupt switches, but they have to be a concern. Hopefully FastestVPN will address them soon in the next updates.

Netflix

The FastestVPN website is not shy about its website's unlocking credentials, and boasts that the service allows you to 'stream, store, view and listen to censored and geo-restricted content from anywhere in the world'.

Our experience in the real world was a little different. When we connected to the British FastestVPN server, for example, it was unable to access BBC iPlayer as the site displays its usual error 'this content is not available at your location'.

But the good news did not last and we were unable to stream Netflix through any of FastestVPN's seven US servers.

If unlocking the website is at the top of your priority list then FastestVPN is likely to be a disappointment. You'll get much better results from competitors like ExpressVPN, Surfshark, VPN Unlimited, or VyprVPN.

Performance

FastestVPN claims it blocks IP and DNS leaks, and our tests confirmed this, with websites including DNS Leak Test, DNS Leak, and IPleak being unable to find any issues.

FastestVPN also includes ad blocking, at least according to the website. We're skeptical about the type of ad blocking included with many VPNs, as it often doesn't make any apparent difference, but FastestVPN was a surprise - it made even the most ad-packed pages readable again. The system isn't as effective as free tools like uBlock Origin, but it's good enough to be useful, especially since blocking at the VPN level means it works automatically on every device that connects to it, without having to install any additional software.

We did some basic checks at each of the 35 FastestVPN locations with a set of automated tests, and the results were also very positive. Connection times were fast on average 3-5 seconds, latencies were normal, and geolocation checks showed that all servers provided IP addresses from the advertised countries.

Our speed tests found that FastestVPN delivered 50Mbps in the UK on our 75Mbps test line. That's a little slower than usual, but only heavy downloaders are likely to notice a problem.

Locations near the UK gave varying results, but were generally similar, with the Netherlands, for example, also reaching 50 Mbps, and France a bit disappointing at 35 Mbps.

This pattern continued with the servers of EE. USA, where speeds ranged from 25 to 50Mbs. And even switching to more distant servers made little difference, as Brazil, Australia, India, and Hong Kong returned capable download speeds of 20 to 40Mbps.

As if being reliable wasn't enough, FastestVPN provides users with additional security features. It offers a free ad blocker to keep the websites you visit free of annoying ads. Although it may not seem that important to VPN software, it is still good to have. Additionally, this VPN service protects clients against online threats with a built-in anti-malware feature. Obviously, it will not replace an antivirus, but it will give the user some additional protection. To ensure that clients are 100 percent secure, FastestVPN has implemented a NAT firewall. This technology protects all devices connected to the VPN. It is very useful considering that FastestVPN allows you to use up to ten devices simultaneously.

FastestVPN unlocks Hulu

They have AES 256-bit encryption in OpenVPN, software that meets the highest security standards and military-grade encryption. They have a built-in ad blocker and a NAT firewall, which is an additional layer of security that blocks all unsolicited traffic entering your device, including malicious software. Their privacy policy is good as they do not keep records and do not track their activities.

Although it has a small network, FastestVPN can still be a great choice due to its privacy and security, and due to its many features that allow streaming, torrenting, circumventing censorship, and offering anonymous online browsing in general.
