Even before the coronavirus pandemic, online learning options were growing. But now, with about a billion and a half students worldwide displaced from schools, educational institutions are struggling to offer e-learning tools.
Just like it did to work from home, COVID-19 may be showing us what's possible in remote education. Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO of the online learning platform Coursera, said that "online learning, with the ability to work remotely, I think it is a great opportunity to provide not only learning but also job opportunities to a class a lot broader people. " It puts universities and other conferences online for remote learning. It is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, and has attracted tens of millions of new customers this year.
During the pandemic, the company opened many of its courses in an emergency so that the universities that closed their campuses can continue to learn by creating study plans in addition to the recorded lectures.
Maggioncalda spoke to 'Marketplace Morning Report' presenter David Brancaccio about the biggest increase in interest in online learning since the start of the pandemic and how Coursera is dealing with the large influx of students. The following is an edited transcript of their conversation.
David Brancaccio: What is the dynamics here? They must be people locked up with extra time on their hands and wanting to learn something new.
Jeff Maggioncalda: It's a series of things, but really start with that. When we look at UNESCO, which tracks schools and students, they discovered that in April 1.6 billion students had their schools closed. So, many of these students, and also people, at the time, who work from home, decided: "I have some time, I would like to continue learning." And, to a large extent, they got to Coursera and other places like Coursera. Since mid-March, we saw 14 million new registered students, we now have 64 million students and almost 30 million course enrollments. This is 500% more than in the same period a year ago. Hence, the high demand from students at home and from people who have been working from home.
Brancaccio: People with extra time on their hands or maybe they no longer have to travel, so they have a little extra time. But, also, we have tens of millions of people expelled from work by the pandemic and some or many will not be offered their old jobs. Do you realize that people try to acquire new skills through the Internet? learning?
Maggioncalda: Absolutely. When we look at the top five courses at Coursera in 2020, in terms of popularity, the number one course, with 2.2 million enrollments, is wellness science. It is a Yale course that talks about how you make decisions to make yourself happy and the biology of happiness. Number two is Machine Learning from Stanford. Number three is University of Michigan Programming for All in Python, then Learn to Learn, and then English for Professional Development from the University of Pennsylvania. Therefore, the highly relevant practical courses for the job seem to be the ones most people take.
Jeff Maggioncalda joined Coursera as CEO in June 2017. He previously worked for 18 years as founding CEO of Financial Engines Inc, a company co-founded by economist and Nobel Prize winner William Sharpe. Financial Engines grew rapidly under Jeff's leadership, providing high-quality online investment advice that has helped millions of people save and prepare for retirement. Jeff also worked as a consultant at McKinsey & Company and Cornerstone Investiga, and continues to serve as Director of Silicon Valley Bank, Inc. He has an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a BA in Economics and English from Stanford University. In his spare time, Jeff learns his entire life and is a proud father, and enjoys studying music theory and spending time with his wife and three daughters.

Coursera courses last approximately four to twelve weeks, with one to two hours of video conferencing per week. These courses provide quizzes, weekly exercises, graded peer assignments, an optional honors assignment, and sometimes a final project or exam. Courses are also offered upon request, in which case users can take their time to complete the course with all available material at once. As of May 2015, Coursera offered 104 courses on demand, it also offers guided projects which are short 2-3 hour projects that can be done and is very useful for students going to university.
In addition to an online website interface for access via PCs and tablets, as is typical in the edtech field, an m-learning smartphone application is also available. Students often discover that m-learning offers them additional flexibility and greater opportunities to take advantage of travel time to learn on the go, or to use unexpected delays and free periods to advance their studies and progress.
Students can schedule their study and learning activities according to their own schedules, to complement work schedules, family commitments, or even other current ongoing courses. Course content includes interactive quizzes, short video conference presentations, peer review, and the ability to connect with other course students and instructors.
In addition to the course content, which is presented on video, there are periodic tests to verify understanding. These tests (or quizzes, to use Coursera's terminology) are by quiz, or by machine, with automatic corrections. In addition, other students carry out peer reviews and there is a final exam before the end of the mobile learning course.
Peer reviews are not only helpful to the student, they benefit the test takers and represent a valuable learning experience for all concerned. Review by other students provides a human input, as opposed to computerized marking of work.
Coursera's focus is to help the student learn more quickly and efficiently. Online web and platforms M-learning courses are based on verified teaching methodologies that have been accredited by educational research experts and have stood the test of time.
Coursera's vision and focus on the student has been shaped by four important factors. Firstly, the effectiveness of online education means that, given easier access to online platforms, it can now play an important role in lifelong learning for students.
Secondly, some of the courses offered include blended learning, that is, face-to-face tutorials or on-site conferences, complemented by a distance education component delivered as online learning. This methodology seems to work well for mainstream universities as well; A combined approach like this has been found to tend to be more effective and produce learning outcomes superior to instruction involving only face-to-face elements.
Rather, this blended learning methodologies approach can be used to balance the predominantly online element of e-learning courses with a partial element on campus. Some of the institutions in Coursera that provide distance education find that a combination of e-learning and physical assistance at the center or faculty of the sponsoring educational provider helps foster student participation, increased attendance, and better performance.
Mastery is the key to success. According to leading educational psychologists, including Benjamin Bloom, the best results are obtained by successfully completing a topic before moving on to the next stage. Coursera provides timely feedback and, if necessary, random repetition tasks for additional practice.
Fundamentally, Coursera is a company that offers an online educational platform. As a company, it operates professionally and has formed alliances with the best leading universities and organizations worldwide to offer online courses that any motivated student with Internet access can take. However, there are costs that any company would naturally want to recover; As an organization, Coursera is currently supported by venture capital fundraising.
Consequently, not all courses are free, although for courses that charge a fee, potential students may apply for support at those costs if their financial situation so dictates. In addition, a fee is charged for certain course completion certificates.
Upon successful completion of a course, students are entitled to receive a Coursera achievement statement, free of charge. There is no need to produce identification for this. Alternatively, a fee is paid if formal qualification or attendance certificates are required. This paid service gives the successful student an ID verified certificate; the cost ranges from USD $ 29 to $ 95 per certificate, depending on the course title. Additionally, there is the possibility of financial aid for students who cannot afford the fee. Students who excel receive an annotated certificate with a distinction.
In Coursera's words, verified certificates ensure academic integrity. The courses of this provider seem to be generally highly respected for being of a high standard and, in the eyes of companies and potential employers, constitute education official.
MOOC completion rates are generally relatively low; many aspiring students start courses but then do not complete them completely. This could be for a number of possible reasons; the overall rate for completion of MOOC courses by all beginners is approximately 15 percent. In particular, this proportion increases significantly when, as is the case with Coursera, students can choose to pay a fee for a certificate.
The challenge for students and course providers is to combine all of these well-established e-learning methods and appropriate data security checks with the content and processor needs of mobile learning through a smartphone app. Sometimes a relatively basic mobile phone may suffice, although courses generally have a better experience with a more powerful smartphone. The popularity of smartphones in Africa has led to strong market demand for Android and other device applications. Typically, across Africa, Internet access by phone is more widespread than access to the World Wide Web via fixed ADSL broadband or standard phone lines.
Comments on the Coursetalk forum mention that Coursera offers some of the best university professors in the world, including computer science and neurobiology. Coursera reportedly offers learning programs suitable for skill tracks, with subjects ranging from statistics to first aid, or science to astronomy.
Based on very positive recent reviews, such as in the PC Mag online edition, Coursera is credited with offering the broadest and most eclectic list of courses for such an online and higher education provider. On-demand lessons at your own pace are available, in addition to timed classes for periods ranging from four to twelve weeks. Discussion boards are reported to be well managed, although some users report that for humanities courses, assessments may be inadequate.
Some experts believe that smaller educational institutions and youth faculties are not proportionally represented in the course catalog, because the income requirements (money, time and support) act as a potential barrier to entry.
Coursera classifies its offer as follows:
- Arts and Humanities

- Computer's science
- Data science
