From 1st July 2016 to 30th June 2017, our company celebrated 50 years of BRITA. The first BRITA products were made by hand in founder Heinz Hankammer's garden. In the years to follow, he transformed the company into an innovative leader in drinking water optimisation. Today, BRITA operates in 66 countries across five continents. Now with a new look and redesigned website, BRITA is ready to take on the future.
BRITA's history began in 1966 when company founder Heinz Hankammer had the great idea of optimising mains water in a smart and convenient way. Since then, our company, headquartered in Taunusstein, Germany, has evolved from a one-man show to an international business with 1,827 employees.
We reached a huge milestone during this period by expanding into Asia. After all, five of the world's eight largest water filtration markets are located in the East. And we want to tap into its potential.
Based on BRITA's new vision "We will change the way people drink water sustainably", cour company grew steadily during these years, and we constantly adapted our product range to fulfill the changing needs of our customers. Corporate responsibility has long been part of BRITA. After all, our products are an environmentally-friendly alternative to bottled water. As a family business that deals with water every day, we especially understand the need too safeguard our planet and its valuable resources.
At BRITA, we know we have a responsibility to reduce our environmental impact. That's why we initiated 'Balance the Impact', our most ambitious sustainability project to date.
'Balance the Impact' is based on a company-wide carbon management. This helps us measure the CO2 emissions caused by our business activities. We calculated our BRITA corporate carbon footprint for the first time in 2015. to further cut emissions, we are pursuing a variety of company-wide measures. For instance, we are improving the energy efficiency of our production sites, our office buildings, and our equipment.
We implemented a car policy that encourages the use of electric vehicles and we are gradually introducing energy-efficient LED lighting. We also want to invest in meaningful projects inside and outside our business. Ones that help prevent carbon emissions and that help us genuinely minimise the impact our company has on the planet - without purchasing compensation certificates.
'Balance the Impact' is not just another sustainability policy. It is a roadmap for the sustainable, responsible choices we can make as a company based on our values and beliefs.
If properly stored, all original BRITA cartridges can be kept for several years. Proper storage means at temperatures between 1 °C and 50 °C, without exposure to direct sunlight or heat. The cartridge should also remain sealed in its original packaging.
Chlorine slows algae growth and as filtered water is devoid of chlorine, algae can take hold more easily. This happens when the water is exposed to any light or heat. To prevent this from happening, you will need to keep the jug in a cool, dark place such as your fridge, pantry or a cupboard.
To remove the growth, please soak the affected area in undiluted Milton solution which is available from your chemist. Leave the solution overnight, then rinse thoroughly. It is not advisable to soak the filter cartridge in this solution.
Jugs: All BRITA jugs are dishwasher-safe up to 50 degrees - except for the lid and the filter change indicator. You can wash the lid carefully by hand.
Bottles: Yes, it is dishwasher safe, however the filter should be removed before washing the bottle. To avoid possible discolouration, please do not wash it together with dirty plates, dishes, cups, etc., as any food residue on these may permanently blemish the bottle. BRITA recommends removing the silicone seal before cleaning in the dishwasher. The seal may be cleaned separately in the dishwasher or by hand.
Carafe: Yes, however the lid, filter exchanger timer and MicroDisc filter must be removed before washing as these parts are not dishwasher safe. You can wash the lid gently by hand.
